Music at Carter Barron

The National Park Service opened the Carter Barron Amphitheater, located on the eastern edge of Rock Creek Park, in 1950. Although initially a venue that promoted music born in or derived from European classical styles, by the 1980s it became a venue frequented primarily by Black teenagers.

This brochure looks at the story of music making at Carter Barron, relying on ticket stubs to reveal what kind of music was made, and listened to, at this popular amphitheater in Rock Creek Park.
